About Pamunkey Wildlife Management Area

Pamunkey Wildlife Management Area (WMA) spans approximately 2,700 acres in King William County, Virginia, along the scenic Pamunkey River. This WMA features a mix of bottomland hardwood forests, upland pine stands, tidal marshes, and freshwater wetlands that support a rich diversity of flora and fauna. Historically, the area was used for timber production and agriculture but has since been managed to restore and enhance wildlife habitats. The unique riverine environment makes it an important site for species such as white-tailed deer, wild turkey, waterfowl, and numerous songbirds. Pamunkey WMA is especially popular among hunters during the deer, turkey, and waterfowl seasons, but it also attracts anglers targeting species like largemouth bass and catfish in the adjacent tidal waters. Visitors can explore several trails and unpaved roads suitable for hiking, birdwatching, and horseback riding. Seasonal flooding of the river provides vital wetland conditions that encourage diverse bird populations, including migratory birds in the winter months. The area is managed by the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources and is open year-round, although some portions may be seasonally restricted to protect habitat during sensitive times. Its proximity to Richmond makes it an accessible natural area for outdoor recreation away from urban centers. Pamunkey WMA's combination of river vistas, forested landscapes, and wildlife opportunities appeals to visitors interested in nature observation, photography, and traditional outdoor pursuits like hunting and fishing.
